Overcome The Limiting Beliefs Holding You Back

We all have dreams and aspirations. However, sometimes we find ourselves stuck, frustrated unable to move forward in our lives. This stagnation often results from our limiting beliefs. These beliefs create internal barriers, that prevent us from achieving our goals. Learning to identify and overcome these beliefs is essential to your success.

Disempowering Internal Dialogue

Many people are unaware of the beliefs that hold them back. These limiting beliefs often manifest as a disempowering internal dialogue. For instance, you might think, "I'm not good enough to apply for that job" or "I'll never find a loving and supportive partner". Recognising these thoughts is crucial if you want to achieve your goals, otherwise you're setting yourself up for frustration or results that aren't what you wanted.

When you're examining your thoughts, ask yourself insightful questions, such as:

  • What do I truly believe about myself?

  • Are these beliefs based on facts or on my previous history?

  • How do these beliefs affect my choices, actions and decisions?

By reflecting on these questions, you begin the process of uncovering your limiting beliefs.

The Impact of limiting Beliefs on Your Life

Limiting beliefs can significantly impact your life. They shape your choices, influence your relationships, and affect your career trajectory. For example, if you believe that you're not worthy of love, you may sabotage potential relationships. Similarly, if you think you're incapable of success, you may avoid taking the steps or pursuing opportunities that get you where you want to go.

For example, all else being equal, an individual who believes they will win contested resources is more likely to do so, as their belief will increase their motivation to fight for those resources.

If we allow our limiting beliefs to dominate our thoughts, we're likely to miss out on life-changing opportunities. So addressing your limiting beliefs is not just beneficial but ultimately life-affirming and clarity-inducing.

Where Do Limiting Beliefs Come From?

Limiting beliefs often originate from our early childhood experiences. Family, friends, school, and societal expectations shape our perception of ourselves. For instance, a child who is frequently criticised may grow up believing they're not good enough. Throw away phrases can also create limiting beliefs. If someone continually hears, "Your sister is so smart" and they never get told that they're smart, they may begin to internalise that message, and begin to believe "I must be stupid."

Additionally, cultural norms can contribute to these beliefs. Certain cultures emphasise perfectionism, leading individuals to believe that anything less is unacceptable. Social media can further amplify these issues, as individuals compare their lives to curated versions of success presented online. Understanding where these beliefs stem from can help in dismantling them.

Investigating Your Limiting Beliefs

Once you've identified your limiting beliefs, the next step is to challenge them. This involves questioning their validity. For example, if you believe you're not good enough, ask yourself:

  • What evidence do I have that supports this belief?

  • Have I ever succeeded in the past?

  • What would I tell a friend who is feeling this way?

By investigating your internal dialogue, you can begin to change your narrative. Replace phrases like "I can't" with "I can learn." Even this simple shift in language will start to transform your mindset and allow you to create or take advantage of new opportunities.

Take Inspired Action

With a new mindset and a broader perspective, you'll feel motivated to take inspired action. You'll start to set goals that excite and inspire you, and even scare you a little but align with you more empowered beliefs. For example, if you want to improve your career prospects, look at where you might need to uplevel your skillset. Once you identify what areas you need to improve to optimise achieving your career goal, you'll naturally begin to look for the means to do so.

You might be scrolling through social media and see a course, workshop, training opportunity or even a job that you can take short term that will give you on-the-job training that allows you to expand your skillset and get paid.

Seek out supportive people who believe in you and encourage you to go for your goal. That could be finding a mentor or coach who can provide valuable guidance and encouragement, or even a content creator whose journey inspires you. If you have friends and family who are supportive, let them know your goal and that you might need them to give you a kick up the butt or remind you what you're capable of when you're feeling a little insecure.

Remember, your life is a journey, not a destination. Celebrate yourself every step of the way, and don't be afraid to fail. Every setback brings greater clarity and offers valuable lessons that contribute to your growth.

Embracing Growth

Overcoming limiting beliefs is part of your growth process. It's an ongoing journey of self-discovery, self-love, and self-acceptance. As you continue to investigate and transform your limiting beliefs, you'll begin to expand your perception of what's possible for your life. With every goal achieved you'll begin to see yourself as the limitless possibility you are. Because of this you get clearer on what a deeply fulfilling life would like to you.

For some it will be seeking out more inner peace, for others it will be building closer family ties, when they've previously been estranged from the family. It could be that you want to change your current trajectory to something you could never have expected, or that you want to be on the world stage inspiring and mentoring others. Maybe you want to transform your body or start a foundation to support a cause you're passionate about.

When you cultivate greater self-awareness and self-reflection it allows you to notice your limiting beliefs with greater ease. You'll notice when you're falling back into old patterns and instead of berating yourself, you're now curious about what's at the root of that and be happy and willing to investigate the root cause.
